Distant Memories 2

“Distant Memories 2” continues exploring that moment of transition between being present and being lost in memories.
It is part of my Portal series.

The design is simpler than Distant Memories 1, yet it has more complexity as well.

Distant Memories 1

Distant Memories 1 is a small piece from my Portals series. I was testing the idea of memories as a portal to the past, to our history. That moment of reminiscing, as one transitions from being in the present to lost in thought. It has a contemplative feel.

Tropical Arch

“Tropical Arch” is another piece from my Portals series. It takes a more literal view of the portals concept by depicting an archway.

The scene is made of pieces of magazine images, tissue paper, maps, and some acrylic paint. I attached all the pieces to watercolor paper, then ran the whole thing through the sewing machine. The stitches, in both black and white, add texture and line detail.

Portal 2

Portals 2 was inspired by Portals 1, a small acrylic painting for my Portals series. Larger, of course, and similar in layout and colors, it has more detail in the circular form.

For more information about the show and our inspiration, visit An Exploration of Portals, April 1-May 28, 2014

Portal 1

This painting was one of the first in my Portals series.

Jan Noden and I made separate series of paintings and collages exploring the theme of portals: both real portals (gateways, arches, doorways) and imaginary (transitions, memories).

This painting was of the more imaginary sort.

New Orleans, a collage

“New Orleans” is a collage inspired by a vacation to that city in 2014. Walking through the French Quarter, I ran across a wonderful building with a colorful first level contrasted against rough upper levels contrasted against bright blue shutters. In the sunlight, the effect was stunning.

Later, walking along the river, I was taken with the trees and landscaping and repetition of round shapes.

So, I combined the two images into this one scene.

Announcing: Uncommon Art!

Yes, I’m still Life Needs Art. But, I have a new studio space and am sharing it with two other artists now. We’ve joined artistic forces to create a combined studio, gallery, classroom space that we’re calling Uncommon Art.

Dana Giel-Ray (Bellabor Art Jewelry) and I have invited Shannon Casey (www.shannoncaseystudio.com) to join us in this new venture. Shannon creates imaginative figurative paintings that tell stories both personal and universal.

The new place is still on North Main Street in Hudson, same block, same side of the street, just a few doors south. The new address is 178 1/2 N. Main Street.

This move has been quite a challenging project. When we first looked at the place, it had been vacant for years, maybe a decade. The “decor” was, shall we say, retro: right down to the green shag carpet, crazy sponge painted walls, and a color palette that can best be described as “dinge”. Light fixtures that had been lopped off, leaving exposed wires dangling. Bird nests in the closet. And a crazy stairway that made you wonder, “What were they thinking?”

Sounds great, right??

But underneath all that, we could see it had twice the square footage of our old studios. The location is ideal, right on the corner of North Main Street and Clinton Street, close to the clocktower. It has its own entrance. Lots of big windows to let in lovely light. We can decorate and arrange to make the space really our own.

It’s taken two months of non-stop renovation, but we’ve turned the living room into a gallery, the dining room into a classroom, and the bedrooms into studios.

The work is now finished and our doors are open. Please stop by and visit. We’ll be glad to give you the tour.
